ECM, CMS and WCM Job Market in Bay Area California USA

June 6, 2009

job_market_ecm_cms_wcm_dm
There are couple of my friends getting laid off from their company, who are working in the Enterprise Content Management, Content Management System and Web Content Management market in Bay Area, CA and in India. Is the job market not good? Is there any implementation going on in companies for ECM? Atleast for WCM and document management and/or collaboration implementation projects are going on in various companies.

I went ahead and did some research on this. I chose three Job search engines – juju.com, simplyhired.com and indeed.com. I chose an area – Santa Clara, CA 95050 and searched jobs for every ECM technology product for 100 miles around.

Technologies I chose were Alfresco, Sharepoint, Documentum, Oracle Stellent and IBM FileNet. The jobs could varu from implementation consultant, developer, project management, business analyst etc., You know what? The interesting find is – There are n number of Sharepoint implementations going on. Sharepoint is very very popular. Documentum is next, but not that high compared to Sharepoint. All others are just hanging in there.

Market is definitely bad and that kind of says – the situation of Job Market for ECM, CMS and WCM related work/projects. By the way – if you are an ECM company and if you want to definitely get job – learn Microsoft SHAREPOINT for now. You will definitely get job in this market too!!

CMS Market in Asia Pacific region (APEJ)

May 26, 2009

The content management software market in APEJ is still
a nascent one that accounts for a minimal slice of the
total software market in the region. IDC claims that the market in India is poised for rapid growth and is
the most promising market in the region.
While all the country markets registered positive growth in 2005, the key contributors were Australia,
Korea, India and the People’s Republic of China. Australia and Korea are projected to remain the largest
markets for content management software throughout the forecast period while strongest growth is still
expected from India.
Interwoven has an existing installed base of close to a dozen Indian customers and some of
the successful implementations include General Electric, India Tea Board, and Asian Paints. Interwoven
also has strong partners in India, including IBM, ITC Infotech, MindTree, Satyam, and Wipro.
In India, FileNet has about 600 certified engineers who undertake direct implementation. Companies
like TCS, HCL, Satyam, Siemens, Bank of America, GE and HDFC are among its customers.
Organisations are looking at ECM to reduce costs and labour inputs. The content management also has
to take into account regulatory compliance norms, for instance, in the financial arena.

If you are an ECM product company or a services company, I believe it is a good shot to spread your wings to these regions, which has lot of  potential too. World is becoming smaller and smaller…

Content Management is a niche market

May 23, 2009

Though there are varied products available from various vendors, Content Management products has been recently acquired or came into the market recently by big guns like Oracle, Microsoft, Xerox, HP, IBM etc.,

There is lot of potential and money in Content Management. I mean there is lot of demand and less of a supply of proper enterprise content solutions. I say this, even though I know that there are n number of products for ECM and specific WCM solutions.

There is no limit to what can be done in Content Management Solutions to corporations. But still, remember even today Content Management Solutions are “vitamin” tablets, rather than being aspirin for the corporations.

Even though I say that – since the new government in USA had come up with digitization of medical documents and allotted like $19 billion – ECM becomes a very important and an aspitin, rather than just being vitamin tablets.

It is never late for a Content Management Product and/or Services Company – since there is lot of potential yet to be used.

Is Global Recession affecting ECM?

May 22, 2009

Is Global recession affecting ECM?

Definitely! ECM is not a very essential element in IT infrastructure. There are companies who still live with what they have – say using File Systems to manage Documents and emails for workflows. Sounds very primitive, but there are even big organizations who are not aware or do not have this ECM infrastructure.

Having said that, there is an increasing awareness and demand for ECM products like Document Management and Collaboration etc., Web Content Management is all the time necessity, if you have a website, which is constantly changing. However ECM is like Vitamin tablet and it is not an aspirin!:)

Though there is demand for ECM products, companies are not willing to spend money on ECM products. However, companies are holding off on their decision for couple of more months. They would want to do it, but not now.

However, companies are looking into the option of  Open Source Alternatives like Alfresco for Enterprise Content Management. And many are looking into cheaper options like Microsoft Sharepoint. I say this cheap because in small scale, Microsoft Sharepoint is low in Total Cost of Ownership. However, when there is a huge increase in licenses, the cost increases.

Anyway, coming to the point – Global Recession has definitely affected ECM market.  Hopefully, things will get back.

Having said that – Web Content Management is something never stopped for demand. There is always demand for Web Content Management in ECM market.

Acquisitions filled Market: ECM

May 22, 2009

Starting past 10 years, ECM has been getting restructured a lot. I believe it is good for the market, when there is a huge storm happens over years and then things get settle down.

If you see the history of the market, there were two tracks. Companies which created document management products and another set was creating web content management products.

Since an ECM market is forming, it is important for the players to spread their wings and add up feathers to the crown and add modules to become an ECM product vendor. Companies needed to graduate from DM to ECM or WCM to ECM.

Hence, all these acquisitions. However, Open Text strategy on acquisitions will be totally different. I am not going to go into that. However, weak companies with high potential gets acquired. Let us see how far it goes.

Today major players are EMC, Open Text, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, HP, Alfresco, Xerox, Vignette.

However, in couple of days – there is a possibility of Vignette getting acquired by Open Text. Reason – nobody knows. Open Text has everything with it, but not sure why would it buy Vignette. May be buy it and throw it out of the market!

Anyway – acquisitions are good, but at sometime it should stop!
