Content Management Trends in 2010

January 15, 2010

Today, there are companies who has not even adopted to a content management solution for their organization efficiencies. That will be the first thing an organization would have to do to proceed in this track.

At any case, for the companies which are ahead of the race, the future trends on Content Management is applicable.

What is coming in Content Management space?

It is not just going to be just content management or web content management or digital asset management for an organization, instead we can expect an integrated solution for the whole approach.

This can be achieved in an incremental fashion also, but here are the items to be adopted into the integrated platform or solution or product.

1) Web Content Management

2) Integrated Search

3) Integrated Analytics

4) Social Component – Collaboration

5) CRM?

6) Digital Assets Management

All-in-one solutions will serve better and that is what I am guessing we will go towards. It would be an integrated Web Platform or Unified Web Platform, instead of just one small component implementation.

Content Management Software, System and Key Benefits of CMS

June 4, 2009
About Content Management Software
Today, organizations are driven by information. And as business transactions and other related activities become increasingly complex, companies are generating massive volumes of data that must be effectively and cost-efficiently managed. Additionally, many firms are striving to go “paperless”, and as a result, they accumulate a tremendous amount of digital content in a variety of formats.
Yet, most organizations struggle to properly administer their most important content. In order to thrive, they must ensure that their mission-critical information is kept up-to-date at all times, and that it is stored in the most reliable and affordable manner possible. It must also be logically organized for easy retrieval, made readily available to key stakeholders across the business, and fully protected from unauthorized access.
What is a Content Management System?
A content management system combines processes and technologies to support digital information throughout its lifecycle. From generation and updating, through publishing and archiving, a content management system supports the widest range of content types, including electronic documents; audio, video, and other multimedia files; Web pages; and more.
With a content management system, all workflows related to file creation, sharing, and management are streamlined and fully automated. Digital content, even files that exist in non-proprietary forms, can be logically stored and archived in a centralized repository. Additionally, information is made more readily available to authorized users, both inside and outside the enterprise, via a network or the Web.
Key Benefits for Your Company
Content management systems offer tremendous benefits to companies who are challenged to keep up in today’s information age, and need a better way to control and administer their digital files. Some of the key advantages of content management solutions include:
Improved content accuracy, consistency, and timeliness through the ability to more efficiently manage updates and changes.

Process of Content Publishing in Corporations

June 4, 2009

This boils down to the content lifecycle. How does the Content gets born (i.e., created)? How does the content get refined, how does the content get propogated through various levels? how does the content get approved? how does the content reach the consumers? how and when does the content expire? Who are all involved in this Content’s lifecycle?

Let us see only the roles involved for the interests of this article.

Content Providers: Content Providers are the stake holders of the content. They really need the content for their business to go well. For example, this could be the actual customer of the content. That is – these guys would want the content to be produced.

Content Producers: Hence comes the introduction to Content Producers in the flow. Content Producers are the ones who create the content. They could be creative content writers or other media producers for the content.

Project Managers: Project Managers take up different projects and make sure content is created, produced and reaches the consumers securely and correctly.

Business Analysts: Business Analysts work with the content producers to come up with the right content.

Web Team: Web Team will be the technology experts in the whole process. Web Team will take care of the technology while all the content is taken care by rest of the roles. Web Team also takes care of Content Management System.

Quality Assurance: QA team makes sure the content and technology works well for the content to reach and live happily to reach Consumers.

Consumers: Consumers are the real receivers and beneficiary of the content produced. consumers also directly or indirectly pay to the content stakeholders and the whole cycle keeps going for ever, until the Content is dead. sorry – euphemistically ‘expired’.

Is it better to build Custom ECM solution or buy and implement ECM?

June 4, 2009

Is it a good idea to build a custom ECM solution from scratch for the company or to buy it?

There had been companies I have worked with for implementation and companies I am working with – have custom solutions in the past. However, good part is companies are realizing that it is very difficult to enhance and depend on the custom solution building companies for feature enhancements. There won’t be standardization on the product etc.,

Now that companies are understanding the good part of buying the product and implementing with customizations and configurations is good for everyone. There are n number of simple WCM or CMS software products available OR there are enterprise content management products available for implementation in the market.

Overall, I strongly believe that buying, customizing and implementing a solution is the BEST route for implementing ECM, considering the number of software products available for CMS/WCM and ECM.

In fact, in terms of investment money also, it saves lot of money. Effortwise, it is easier. You don’t have to do lot of requirements analysis – just technology bake-off would be enough. Support would be best, since it will be proven solution and many would have implemented already.

If you want to travel to New York from Boston and back often – would you build an aeroplane, instead of just buying flight tickets and fly back and forth? Just a straight forward analogy.

OpenZine – my take on this Open Newspaper/Magazine CMS Publishing

June 3, 2009

I want to let you know all about this great product, for Magazine and Newspaper publishing for FREE.

OpenZine is an online magazine CMS, using which anybody can create a magazine and release it periodically. I understand that  there are lot of features, which can be added more – but it is a great product.

From the time, I launched this blog – one of my top post was FREE Newspaper and Magazine publishing using Drupal. OpenZine solves the problem of lot of common people. Given the age of web 2.0 and consumer based applications available on-demand and Consumers contributing content to the internet – there is an increasing need for magazine publishing.

OpenZine helps for every common man, who wants to just launch a magazine and maintain it online. These days launching a magazine has become like launching a website, on those days.

I signed up to OpenZine and I was able to create a magazine for myself – say for Simply ECM only and I haven’t published it, but definitely tested the software out. Long way to go, but this will become popular very soon.

How is Content affecting our day-to-day life?

June 2, 2009

This is a little imagination cum “roaming thoughts” article.

Do I use Content in some way or other in my life? Yes – very much.
Considering the fact that I am in a digital world and using Computers, Mobiles for day-to-day communication, I do use Content a lot.

(1)  I write and read emails
(2) I do send text messages in mobile phones.
(3) I call and record voice messages
(4) I draw pictures for conveying a concept easily.
(5) I chat with a buddy in instant messaging.
(6) I record audio songs and listen to it for relaxing and enjoying.
(7) Record and watch video files – YouTube, DVDs.
(8)  Games with all types of data.
(9)  I write documents, fill spreadsheets for conveying my thoughts and data calculations respectively.
(10) and the list goes on.
(11) Even thoughts are CONTENT.

We live with Content and sleep with Content in our mind. You know what I am saying. Even Thoughts are content in some format. Only Format is different from being digital. Once Thoughts are translated to digital format it becomes content in digital format. Who knows – someday in future even Thoughts would become one form of content and it can be transferred directly into Digital format using a USB port:)

Would you buy Content by paying cash?

June 2, 2009

Is Content worth to buy? As you know content is king and there is already demand for it. Content could be in any language – say English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Hindi etc., But would you pay for it to buy it? That is the question for this article.

Content is definitely somebody’s effort using creativity, thoughts, language and written/audio/video communication skills etc., Since it involves knowledge and manual labour efforts, it is definitely worth for some money. Content is not very expensive as a Programming language Source code would cost. Yes, content written using Java language might be expensive than a content written in English language. Having said that, Content is definitely worth some money, unless the content is wrapped under a costly wrap like Whitepaper or a Technology Bake-off etc., which involves some effort, on top of just writing the content. I am having only text content in mind, while I write this article, though content could be in various formats like picture, audio, video etc.,

Now, the question is – would you buy it? If there is a need for content and it is special highly demanded content I would buy. Or if the Content would give me some benefit like – say the Content is huge and it is in a blog – focussed on my domain or market. If that content would fetch me traffic to my website, increase my page ranking and generate more revenue for me, I would pay cash to buy the Content!

There are professions for writing content – Technical Writers, Content Providers, Content Producers, Creative Writers Journalists, Editors, Reporters and these days there are Bloggers. On other hand, there are other content producers like Statisticians, Medical Transcriptionists, Audio content producers, Video producers etc., are whole different categories and lot of branches under it. I am not getting into that.

Content is always KING and QUEEN I would say.  As I say this, may be somebody will buy this blog or pay us money to write this content:)

How to download a flash file using the URL?

June 2, 2009

I was trying to download a flash file using the web URL I had, which ended with .html.

One way is to look into the Page Source and identify what is the file name. Modify the web URL by removing the HTML file and changinng the path with the swf file you have got. I used my Download accelerator to download this flash file.

I was able to download my flash file, but eventually there were multiple files looks like. I was only able to download the main file. Then I was figuring out how to download all the files related to this main Flash file.

So, at last I found a software called Flash Save. Using this I was able to download all the files related to this. Check it out, when you need it. Hope it is helpful!
