FishBowl Solution’s CollabPoint – Collaboration for Oracle Stellent UCM

June 3, 2009

Here is my previous post on ECM and Collaboration

Easy knowledge sharing

A single enterprise-wide repository
Intuitive and easy-to-use interface
Wider view of assets within the system
Team collaboration across different locations
Reduced IT needs and budgets
Advanced Search abilities

Fishbowl Solutions, a partner of Oracle since 1999 had come up with a Collaboration platform called CollabPoint for Oracle Stellent UCM implementation. If you have invested on Oracle Stellent UCM and you are envied by the collaboration abilities of SharePoint, then these guys say they have a collaboration solution.

The name could have been chosen better. It kind of sounds like SharePoint. I know they have taken the route of SharePoint, but it does not mean they have to end with Point. That does not sound originality. Anyway, I haven’t really looked at the functionalities, but it is said that the functionalities are similar to that of SharePoint.

Some of the notable items are Easy knowledge sharing, A single enterprise-wide repository, Intuitive and easy-to-use interface, Wider view of assets within the system, Team collaboration across different locations, Reduced IT needs and budgets and Advanced Search abilities.

Whatever it is – it is difficult to compete with SharePoint’s look and feel. Only if CollabPoint can do a lot than SharePoint, then it makes sense for people to adopt for it. Oh, yeah – another reason for adoption or trying this product would be – that if you have already invested in Oracle Stellent UCM.

Well, Even if you have invested in UCM, there is always ways to integrate with SharePoint as well for Collaboration.

ECM with Collaboration

May 25, 2009

In the era of web 2.0 days, we are in the need for consumer focussed websites for enterprises. Individual Employee focussed and Public Consumer focussed web interfaces are in demand.

Every enterprise needs Enterprise Content Management as part of their IT infrastructure, but at the same time Collaboration and consumer based social networking components are mandatory.

Collaboration includes wiki, blog, discussion forums, calendaring etc., Companies need Document Management and Web Content Management mainly, in addition to any specific needs like Records Management, Digital Assets Management etc., But today, looks like Collaboration is also part of Enterprise Content Management.

Microsoft Sharepoint’s major strength in the market seems to be with Collaboration, in addition to the WCM piece. On top of it, the popularity of Sharepoint among users, due to awareness and users being used with Microsoft based user interfaces. User adoption is in a great swing with Sharepoint. People are easily able to adapt to Sharepoint.

EMC combines its strength of Documentum repository with Sharepoint for its collaboration. There are major corporations today who are using Sharepoing for collaboration with Documentum repositories. Major Energy corporations are using this.

IBM FileNet is already trying to do the collaboration with its own Lotus Quickr product. IBM FileNet also has doors to connect to Sharepoint. An open source option to this is Alfresco. Alfresco has a collaboration component released end of last year called – Alfresco Share. In other hand, Alfresco has also opened doors to connect to Sharepoint using Sharepoint protocol. Alfresco’s content repository strength can be combined to work with Sharepoint as well.

Overall I see, Collaboration component to be part of Enterprise Content Management already.

Excited about Microsoft Sharepoint!

May 22, 2009

I worked on (MOSS 2007) Sharepoint today to get the feel of the features.

It has nice look and feel, as it is always MS. I have worked on a product in past, which is a CRM product – i.e., Microsoft Dynamics CRM. This also had similar look and feel.

I can kind of conclude it has Perfect Collaboration platform, Simple Document Management and at last straightforward simple WCM features which reminds me of Joomla’s or Drupal’s.

While installation of Sharepoint and usage of the product is probably straightforward, I will have to try integrating with Alfresco or any other good ECM solution like Documentum, Open Text or Interwoven and see. That will be a challenge and most of the customers/prospects might choose a combo solution with Sharepoint + an ECM.
